Short answer

Prepare your passport and entry evidence, insurance, two ways to pay, a deliberate data plan, essential apps and an offline arrival pack. Check medication and power-bank rules before packing, then test whether you can connect, pay and reach the first hotel without improvising.

1. Confirm documents and entry eligibility

Check the rule for the passport you will actually use and for the complete itinerary. A visa exemption, a bilateral arrangement and the 240-hour transit policy are different entry routes; none removes normal immigration inspection.

Keep your passport, return or onward booking, first accommodation and a simple itinerary accessible. Save insurance details, emergency contacts and secure copies separately from the originals. Malaysian ordinary-passport holders should use the dedicated entry guide; other nationalities should verify the current rule with China's National Immigration Administration or the Chinese mission responsible for them.

  • Passport and required visa or exemption evidence
  • Return or onward booking
  • First hotel name, address and telephone number
  • Insurance and emergency contacts

2. Make payment work before departure

Install the official Alipay and WeChat apps, complete the requested identity checks and link eligible international cards while you still have reliable internet and bank access. A setup screen is not the same as a successful payment, so keep more than one method available.

Carry a second physical card and a modest amount of renminbi. Keep access to the mobile number or banking app used for security checks, and never share a verification code with a driver, guide or merchant.

3. Choose data, maps and communication tools

Choose roaming, a travel eSIM or a local SIM deliberately. Coverage, offshore routing, voice, SMS and hotspot support vary, and a VPN does not create a data connection by itself.

Before departure, install official payment, translation, mapping, rail and ride-hailing tools. Save each hotel and important destination in Chinese, download any offline language data you need and keep arrival instructions outside an app that may require a fresh login.

4. Prepare health, medicine and insurance details

China's published visitor guidance allows a reasonable quantity of ordinary medication for personal use subject to Customs inspection. Keep medicines in original packaging and carry prescriptions, medical records or diagnostic evidence where relevant.

Narcotic and psychotropic medicines have tighter rules and quantity limits. Check the exact ingredient with the appropriate Chinese mission or Customs before travel rather than relying on a brand name, and make sure the insurance policy fits the destinations and activities on the itinerary.

5. Check power, weather and baggage rules

Mainland China uses a 220V, 50Hz electricity supply and more than one socket shape is encountered, so check both the plug and the input range printed on each device. Pack for the actual cities, season, altitude and walking plan rather than treating China as one climate.

Power banks and spare lithium batteries belong in cabin baggage under airline safety rules. For domestic flights in China, CAAC also prohibits power banks without a clear CCC mark, with an unclear mark or from recalled models. Check the airline and CAAC again before departure because capacity and marking rules can change.

6. Pass the arrival-day test

Before leaving home, put the phone in airplane mode and try to open the saved arrival pack. You should be able to identify the correct terminal, show the hotel name and address in Chinese, call the property, explain the booking and choose a payment fallback.

A useful first-day folder contains the passport and entry details, first hotel, transfer plan, insurance contact, essential medicine information and one trusted person's number. If those items work offline, a delayed SIM or wallet verification becomes an inconvenience rather than a crisis.

  • Connect to mobile data
  • Pay with a tested option or fallback
  • Show the hotel address in Chinese
  • Contact the hotel or emergency support
  • Reach the hotel without relying on memory
